Our Beliefs

Welcome to the Downers Grove Seventh-day Adventist Church! Our church has a rich history of serving our community and spreading the love of Jesus Christ. From our humble beginnings to our present-day vibrant, diverse community, we have always been dedicated to following God's will and sharing His message with others.

Our mission is to receive, live, & share the good news of a loving God and a soon coming Savior.

Seventh-day Adventists accept the Bible as their only creed and hold fundamental beliefs to be the teaching of the Holy Scriptures.  These beliefs constitute the church's understanding and expression of the teaching of Scripture.

Growing Closer to God

Love:  A Creator God

Our Creator God is love, power and splendor. God the eternal Father is the Creator, Source, Sustainer, and Sovereign of all creation.

God is just and holy, merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness.

By knowing Jesus, we know God the Father.  “Whoever has seen me has seen the Father” (John 14:9)

“Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” Jesus replied: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”  Matt. 22:36-40

Gen. 1:1; Deut. 4:35; Ps. 110:1, 4; John 3:16; 14:9; 1 Cor. 15:28; 1 Tim. 1:17; 1 John 4:8; Rev. 4:11.)

Jesus - Our Gift from God

God gave His Son, Jesus Christ, to make the ultimate sacrifice and redeem us from sin. God the eternal Son became incarnate in Jesus Christ. Through Him all things were created, the character of God is revealed, the salvation of humanity is accomplished, and the world is judged.

Forever truly God, Jesus the Christ,  became also truly human.  He was conceived of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He lived and experienced temptation as a human being, but perfectly exemplified the righteousness and love of God.

God gave His Son, Jesus Christ, to make the ultimate sacrifice and redeem us from sin.

Isa. 53:4-6; Dan. 9:25-27; Luke 1:35; John 1:1-3, 14; 5:22; 10:30; 14:1–3, 9, 13;

Jesus - Our Salvation

The salvation we find in Jesus is the most precious gift imaginable. It affects our lives eternally, and in the here and now.  Sin leads to death, but since Jesus died in our place, we are no longer condemned to die forever. We can claim this gift through our belief and allegiance to Him.

By His miracles Jesus manifested God’s power and was attested as God’s promised Messiah. He suffered and died voluntarily on the cross for our sins and in our place, was raised from the dead, and ascended to heaven to minister on our behalf.

He will come again in glory for the final deliverance of His people and the restoration of all things.

Rom. 6:23; 1 Cor. 15:3, 4; 2 Cor. 3:18; 5:17-19; Phil. 2:5–11; Col. 1:15-19; Heb. 2:9-18; 8:1, 2.

Rest - The Sabbath

"Remember the sabbath day—keep it holy. "  Exodus 20:8

On the Sabbath day, we worship our God, we rest to celebrate God’s accomplishment of creating the world, and creating humanity to live in it and take care of it. We pause to take notice, learn more, and express gratitude to our Creator.  When God rested on the seventh day, He set for us an example. He gave the weekly Sabbath as a day of rest and worship for all of mankind - perfect opportunity to connect with God.

Adventists believe the Sabbath is a blessing for every created person, and it reminds us that we each have a powerful Creator and a loving Savior.

“Six days shall work be done, but on the seventh day is a Sabbath of solemn rest, a holy convocation. You shall do no work. It is a Sabbath to the Lord in all your dwelling places” (Leviticus 23:3, ESV).

“If you call the Sabbath a delight, and the holy day of the LORD honorable… then you will delight in the LORD, and I will make you ride over the heights of the land…” (Isaiah 58:13,14, CSB).

True Religion - Love One Another

"Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world. " James 1:27

Jesus replied: ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. ’This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”

“Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. 35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’

"The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’ " Matt. 25:34-36, 40

Peace - Salvation

Salvation is being saved from our sins and accepting God’s gift of eternal life. When you accept God’s salvation, you can be at peace about your future. You don’t have to live in fear because God has promised to save you from the eternal consequences of sin.

When we choose salvation, we accept that we are God’s children.

“As many received Him, to them gave He power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on His name” (John 1:12, KJV).

Health - A Lifestyle

It’s important for our mental and physical health to take time to rest and refresh. Studies have shown that people who take time to rest from their labors are healthier and more productive.
