Dear Downers Church Family:

He wasn’t expected to amount to much. Even though he was born an aristocrat - the grandson of a Duke and son of a Lord - young Winston Churchill was destined to be a failure. Or, was he?

According to his biography, Winston’s parents were usually estranged, with his mother entertaining many suitors. Winston claimed he didn't know his father and knew his mother at a distance. As a child, his most prized relationship was his nanny. At age 7, Winston was sent to boarding school where he did poorly academically yet behaved even worse. After a time, Winston grew weary due to health challenges, so he moved to another school. He barely passed the entrance exam, but proceeded to improve in his scholastic career.

However, Winston could not shake his bad behavior. He was a disappointment to the family. One of the letters written by Winston’s father stated, “Do not think that I am going to take the trouble of writing you long letters after every failure you commit and undergo….I no longer attach the slightest weight to anything you may say….If you cannot prevent yourself from leading the idle, useless, unprofitable life you have had during your school days...you will become a mere social wastrel, one of the hundreds of public school failures, and you will degenerate into a shabby, unhappy and futile existence….You will have to bear all the blame for such misfortunes….”

Winston decided to persevere rather than give up in self-pity. He became an award-winning artist and author. One of his books even achieved him a Nobel Prize. He was a member of the Parliament of England and eventually prime minister of Great Britain - twice! As prime minister during World War II, he helped take down Adolf Hitler and brought an end to Nazi Germany. At best, the world viewed Winston Churchill as mediocre, yet he changed the trajectory of Britain and the world during the 20th Century.

A similar situation faced the youngest son of Jesse. He was destined to be a pip-squeak chasing sheep all of his days. Yet when facing insurmountable odds, he would not back down. Let us re-examine David’s fight with Goliath that it may inspire us to do great things for our God.
