Sermon Series

Drawn Out

As we start our sermon series on the life of Moses, we must first realize that at his beginning, all odds were stacked against him.  The powers that existed in Egypt wanted to snuff out the life of every male from the Israelite camp.  He was destined to die.  But God had other plans.

Dear Downers Church Family:

There was a family joke in the Kennedy household: If a mosquito bit Jack, it was putting itself at great risk and it was almost certain to die.

Jack (John Fitzgerald) Kennedy was born second of nine children to Joseph and Rose Kennedy.  But from a very young age, he was expected to live a sickly, meager life.  His mother Rose once recorded some of Jack’s childhood sicknesses on a notecard such as “whooping cough, measles and chicken pox.”  If there was a childhood sickness, Jack would contract it.  In February of 1920, he contracted scarlet fever so bad that it kept him bedridden for about a month.  His parents thought he might not make it out of this alive.  He was not yet 3 years of age.

Throughout his childhood and teenage years, it is recorded that he also suffered from jaundice, diphtheria, asthma, pneumonia and appendicitis.  His brother, Joe, was supposed to be the “world changer.”  He was being groomed for political office, hopeful to be president of the United States someday.  But it was Joe who suffered an early death and Jack that was preserved to change the landscape of America.  He was a champion of poverty, race relations and technological advances (i.e. NASA).  This man, destined for an early death, changed many lives in our United States.

As we start our sermon series on the life of Moses, we must first realize that at his beginning, all odds were stacked against him.  The powers that existed in Egypt wanted to snuff out the life of every male from the Israelite camp.  He was destined to die.  But God had other plans.
