Sermon Series

Abraham

Thousands of years ago Abraham and Sarah were presented with a promise from God:  “I will make your children like the stars in the sky.  Your family legacy will be passed on for generations.  You just need to wait.”  The Lord seemed to be saying, “if you wait until I get back into the room you’ll get a double treat”.  The problem was that Abraham and Sarah had been waiting.  (He and she were 85 and 75 years old, respectively).  They had waited way longer than 15 minutes.  Could it be that God had forgotten about them?

A few years ago my wife showed me a video of our friend who conducted an experiment with her son.  She placed a marshmallow in front of him and said that if he could wait until she came back in a few minutes that he would receive two marshmallows.  The video was probably 7 or so minutes long but must have seemed like an eternity for the young boy.  Ultimately her son waited out the time and received his second treat.

This was not a solitary experiment.  We started noticing many parents trying this out with their kids.  But this was nothing new.  In the late 1960s and early 70s there was an experiment conducted by a Stanford Professor, Walter Mischel.  Like in the contemporary videos, he would place a sweet treat like a marshmallow or cookie in front of a child.  He would then say that the treat would double if they could wait until he (or one of the other testers) would return to the room.  They would often be gone for about 15 minutes.

Years later there was follow-up to see it this “delayed gratification” showed up in other areas of the children’s lives.  The results were astounding to many.  According to the results, many of the children that waited had higher S.A.T. scores, higher educational attainment, better B.M.I.s, and overall better life outcomes.
